I met with Dave over Zoom on July 8th and we began to go over the short response he had written the week before. I projected the picture of his essay he had emailed me and went sentence by sentence and asked him to read his writing aloud. In the beginning, I had to correct an article used of syntax and explained to the best of my ability why syntax had to be a certain way. But I was also pleasantly surprised when later in his writing, Dave began to read his essay and corrected an error he made himself when he read it aloud and realized the error. I was sure to give a lot of positive feedback when he did that. The goal of this writing assignment was to measure his abilities and it really reinforced that his in use abilities lack a little bit in writing but his speaking is much better. Towards the end of our session, I was struggling to explain the difference between “short/long” and “close/far” and I told him we’d finish editing next session.
