This
was my first session with my new tutee, Je-won. The first part of my PowerPoint
was an ‘about me’ section. I introduced myself, where I was from, my background
and my pets. I included my own pictures so he could visualize what I was
saying. Je-won’s previous tutor, Signe, let me know all the topics they had
already covered. They had not covered food yet, so that is what I prepared for
this session. In a PowerPoint, I introduced foods of all kinds. I made sure to
include common food in Korea like soup, ramen, different kinds of meat, and
rice. The font on all my slides were in Comic Sans because studies show that this
font is the easiest to read for beginners. I had him listen and repeat the
vocab words. I found that he did not repeat difficult words, so I kept
repeating those words in a slow, clear voice so he can listen for
pronunciation. With each of the vocab, I asked what color the pictures were,
and he did an excellent job at recognizing them. Next, I introduced the
question “Do you like ___?” using a rising intonation. I then taught him the
responses “yes, I like…” and “no, I don’t like…” with pictures that match the
tone of the answer. Showing him slides of
the food we covered, I asked Je-won whether he likes them or not. He was quiet
at first, but eventually he was great at answering using with the phrases he
learned today. Finally, I ended the lesson by reviewing animal vocab, something
he had covered with Signe, which he found easy!
