Topic/Skill: Reading Comprehension, Vocab & Speaking Fluency

Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned: For my second session with Soojin, I prepared another reading from the same text as last week. Again, she read it with 80% accuracy. To test her comprehension and speaking skills, I chose sentences that contained metaphors and philosophical meaning and asked her to interpret the author’s message. Her responses were expressed well, and I was able to add my own thoughts to create an even longer discussion. After that, we went over vocab she was not familiar with. I explained their definition(s), part of speech, level of frequency and provided example sentences. As we entered a long discussion about clichés, I was glad that I researched the word features of potential vocabulary based on her English level. The last activity I prepared was meant to practice speaking fluency, so I told her not to worry about grammar. I asked her, “What do you think about…?” and then gave her topics to speak about. For example, “What do you think about people who open the door for you?” I learned about Korean and American cultural differences with this activity.
