Naomi TS#1
On Monday, July 6th at 8 am I tutored Je-ah Lee. I had prepared a slide show with introductory facts about myself and questions to help me get to know Je-ah a bit better. I modeled the introduction and then asked her the same four questions I answered. She was able to answer some of them with some difficulty while with other she did not understand my question. After the introduction, I wanted to get a feel for what she already new so the remainder of the slides were filled with the alphabet, numbers 1-20, basic shapes, and colors. With the alphabet and numbers, I went over them in order and I saw that she already had a good grasp so then I pointed at individual ones out of order and had her tell me what number or letter it was. She had a really good grasp of those two subjects. When we moved on to colors, I wanted to see how much she already knew so I tried pointing at a color and asking her what it was. After a couple seconds of waiting it became clear that she was struggling so, I decided to go over the colors. I started off with a video I had already preselected. When the video ended I returned to scenes throughout the video and quizzed her on colors. I think she mostly just needed a refresher on the colors because when I was quizzing her she did really well. Then, I moved on to shapes, had a bit of difficulty with the shapes so I played another short video and went over the shapes with different pictures. I think towards the end she got a little bit nervous and her affective filter started to come up. However, I could see that she did have a good grasp of the basic shapes and I tried to reassure her that she was doing a great job. Throughout the different subjects, I tried to incorporate things from the previous subjects to continue testing her knowledge. For example, with the shapes, I asked her what color the specific shape was. With the names of the shapes, I pointed at different letters and asked her to tell me the name of that letter. Overall, Je-ah was a wonderful tutee and surprised me with the amount of knowledge she already had. I think since I covered so many subjects in one session, it might have been a little overwhelming even though I was just trying to see what she knew. In the next lesson, I will try to focus on one subject.
