Margot TS #2

For this tutoring session, Alice and I focused on parts of speech. We only covered nouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs in this lesson. For the first 15 minutes, we talked about what "jobs" each of these parts of speech has. Then we came up with four example words for each part of speech. Alice has a great handle on nouns and verbs, but still struggles a bit with adjectives and adverbs.
For an activity, we learned about acrostic poems. I showed an example of an acrostic poem I made using my own name. After that, we used Alice's name. The goal was to think of describing words that she felt applied to her. If I were to do this activity again, I think it would be better to provide a vocabulary list of adjectives. Alice has good receptive control of many adjectives but cannot produce nearly as many.
After we finished the acrostic poem. Alice and I wrote one introductory paragraph about her. It took quite a bit of prompting to have Alice create complete sentences, but in the end, we succeeded. We included some fun pictures to describe what we said in the paragraph.
At the end of the lesson, I had Alice read aloud her new chapter to the comic she wrote. Alice has great speaking skills. Since Alice loves to draw, I promised that we would work on creating a comic book about her story as one of our projects.
