On June 25th, I observed Ryan Flemming's listening class from 2 - 2:50 pm. He began the class by going over the agenda for that day. I thought this was a good way to start the class as the students will know what to expect and he allowed them to voice any concerns they had regarding the agenda. In the first activity, the students were tested on their comprehension of the material they had covered in the previous class. They were asked to pick out key themes from the two texts and compare and contrast them. Then the students had a discussion regarding one of the topics and how it applied to their own life. In the final activity, the students listened to a speech from a professor, and then in pairs, they discussed what they thought the key points were. In the first activity, Professor Flemming did a wonderful allowing the students to discover the main points on their own and not giving them the answer. I liked how he incorporated a lot of discussion in his activities, allowing the students to practice their conversation skills. The listening material was interesting and age and level appropriate. There were some words that were more technical and some students might not have been able to understand them, but most of the material was at their level. Professor Flemming also had an energetic and open demenor which made the class more enjoyable. Overall, I would say that Professor Flemming did a wonderful job selecting the listening material, incorporating conversation skills, and allowing students to make mistakes.
