Topic/Skill: Speaking

Teacher Presentation: The instructor, Olivia James, began by providing an outline of the plan for the class session. She then played and excerpt from a podcast about intrinsic/extrinsic motivation and their role in language learning. Afterward, she summarized the content of the podcast before asking students their opinion on it. This discussion took up the entirety of the class session.

Classroom Management: The students remained in the main room for the whole class.

Materials: Zoom, Microsoft Word, Canvas and computer speakers

Student Participation: The instructor encouraged all students to participate by asking thoughtful questions related to the podcast excerpt played in class. The instructor encouraged all the students to participate by calling on specific students to answer her questions rather than addressing questions to the whole class.

Feedback Provided: Since this is a course specifically focused on speaking, the instructor seemed to be more focused on fluency than accuracy. Rather than focusing on grammar or pronunciation, the instructor provided commentary on the actual content of the students' responses.

Lesson(s) on teaching you learned: This lesson reaffirmed to me the importance of practicing fluency in speaking rather than just accuracy. Having students speak about a topic in which they are genuinely interested can lower than affective filters and help them speak more fluently.
