Topic/Skill: Listening
Teacher Presentation: Dr. Pollock began the class by asking students what they knew about the term "ecosystems," since this was the topic that in-class activities would address for the day. He then had students complete a single-listening lecture, in which they listened to a podcast one time before summarizing it and answering specific questions related to the text. Dr. Pollock then introduced common transition words used in English. Subsequently, he had students read a passage and listen to a practice lecture before asking students to identify which transition words were used.
Classroom Management: The students remained in the main room during class.
Materials: Zoom, Microsoft Word and PowerPoint
Student Participation: Students were called on to answer the discussion questions related to the in-class texts. They were asked to summarize passages and share their notes, in addition to answering specific questions about the content of the texts.
Feedback Provided: Students received immediate feedback if they made a grammar error. If a student made a mistake regarding the content of the passage, the teacher would encourage other students to help provide the correct answer.
Lesson(s) on teaching you learned: Integrated lessons in which students, for example, must write and listen at the same time are especially effective when emphasizing a new grammar topic such as transition words.
