Dr. Angel Rios
Reading Group 4A 11:00-11:50 a.m.

Today I observed Dr. Rios' reading class. There were about 10 students. I found this class really interesting because as a group we went over a reading passage about the Genetic Basis for Criminal Behavior. Dr. Rios had the students describe the main ideas of the reading thus far and then began having each of them read a passage. As they were reading aloud, Dr. Rios went over and defined possible unknown terms and phrases. I noticed that he really focused on having the students get a true understanding of the reading. He would encourage them to try to answer, and although it was hard to get students talking in the beginning, they quickly began answering and giving ideas. After reading the passage, as a class they would go over the highlighted words and had the students try and figure out what they meant using context clues. Dr. Rios would give specific examples of the definition and distinguish them from possible similar words. I thought that it was really helpful how he emphasized that you don't necessarily need to understand every single word to get the main idea of the reading, and I think that this is really helpful particularly for those students who fixate on knowing the meaning of every single word.
