Today I observed Dr. Rios Speaking Class. He was very welcoming, he let me introduce to the class and he explained to me the structure of the lesson. He split the lesson in two main activities:
1)Discussion: students had to choose a number from 1 to 10 and every number was related to a statement. Students were asked to express their opinion about the statement correspondent to their number.
2)Timed speaking: Dr. Rios shared a Word document where students could find all the activity's instructions. He explained the exercise very well and the instructions were very clear. The students could use the Word Document to prepare their speech. They had to prepare a 45 second speech around one topic (e.g. If you saw someone stealing, would you report it?).
At the end, he left some time for questions and clarifications.
Overall, Dr. Rios did an amazing job, he was always correcting mistakes after giving a positive feedback. He was encouraging students to participate all the time, and everyone was able to express their opinion without feeling judged. All the feedbacks were clear and precise. He was taking notes every time that the students were speaking and he was correcting the main mistakes at the end of their speech using the Zoom chat. He was also writing all the correct words that the students were using and he was explaining every new word with practical examples and clear definitions.
I really enjoyed observing this class, it was really inspiring as everyone was actively participating and sharing opinions depending, also, on their cultural background which made the class extremely unique.
